Libraries & Instrction
Instruction in the library takes many forms, from direct lectures with classes to informal discussions about finding needed materials. Utilizing many of the strategies and skills I learned in the classroom has allowed me to integrate information literacy lessons into weekly library classes. With a focus on teaching students to access, use, and evaluate information, I have come to realize just how important it is to align my lessons with classroom instruction. Two CIMT courses were especially helpful in this realization, a CIMT 631 project reflection and my CIMT ASSURE lesson plan. I have since taken both of those projects, revised and updated them, and used them with my SCCS students. The challenge, then, is in the collaboration necessary to plan instruciton that works with the classroom teachers. A library with a great collection is not enough; positive change, higher academic achievement, and gains in learning happens only with a committed school-wide initiative to work together.
There are many things I love about being a school librarian. But the one thing I love the most is that the library is the largest classroom in the school! I love having contact with all of my students, from my youngest Pre-Kindergarten child just learning how to hold a book and sound out letters, to my seniors who ask for help editing college essays and every one of my students in between. I never imagined that I would find such joy in the library. The CIMT courses have helped channel that love into my career as a library media specialist working in international schools.
