Libraries & Technology
Connect, collaborate, and communicate. These three words are at the core of how libraries and technology should intersect in the 21st Century. Technology is changing the way libraries view their physical space – they are collections for books, but also community centers, online virtual destinations, or any combination of these. Technology is changing the very idea of what a book looks like. And technology is changing the nature of librarianship, to encompass new ways of accessing, using, and disseminating information. All these changes are about the connections, collaboration and communication that librarians make with their students and patrons.
My experiences with technology have been steadily increasing over the past few years. I volunteered to teach a multimedia course as an English elective in 2010 and with the students, I learned about blogging, creating emagazines, and wikis, to name just a few things the course touched upon. I loved learning as the students learned, for it was a true collaboration. In CIMT 543 I learned how to create a Photostory and have since used that program for other school related projects, such as this Global Issues Network Photostory. One of the biggest concerns I have as a librarian is making sure the students understand that technology is another tool and not the only tool, to use for their information needs.
