Libraries & Reading
I am in the business of connecting books with readers and I am good at it! As a reading consultant and reading promoter, I often joke that my job is to "push books". During CIMT 512 I explored what five American international schools have done to connect literature to students, and the results show that one of the biggest things is to offer a wide variety of resources and engaging programs to get students excited about reading. SCCS's Dr. Seuss Day, Reading Incentive Month, and Family Reading Nights aresome of the ways in which I engage my students.
A special considertion international schools face is ensuring that there are materials in the predominant native language. This allows parents to engage in their child's reading development and fosters greater participation in the school community. Bilingual books greatly assist with English language acquision skills and have been used as a part of my lower elementary litearcy program for the past several years.
